Do not compare persicaria with its delinquent relative, the black stetsoned Japanese Knotweed. Although often vigorous, they are not concrete breakers, and their beautiful flowers are long lived and buzzing with insect life. This Persicaria amplexicaulis ‘Rosea’ is looking spectacular at the moment, both to myself and the hover flies that are crowding its slim pearly pink blooms.

Must be honest, I’ve found varieties of Polygonum often look exactly like their Persicaria counterparts but are less vigorous. 😉 I prefer the redder “Astrosanguinea” or “Firedance” though.

Strange that isn’t it! Much nicer name than polygonum. Yes the red ones are nice too. I really like Darjeeling Red, which of course is white for a while, very confusing.

I have Persicaria amplexicaulis Firetail , which provide a long colourful display this time of year. I found to my cost in June when cutting some of it back, it has spread over the years, that the sap is toxic. I came out in a red hot rash all over my arms and face. It was a hot day and I had obviously wiped my hands over my face. It is a useful garden plant, just be careful.

Love them, tough plants and great for pollinators at this time of year. have a red flowered one, honestly don’t remember the cv. name (is not the Firetail). I reserve my memory for things I collect seeds from :0 :))
