The hail is flamenco-ing on the velux and I am remembering happy days.
This photo was taken at the very end of March 2016 at Holbrook Garden. I was visiting this wild and wonderful garden with the grand dame of Little Ash, Helen. A meadow of Fritillaria meleagris, the snake’s head fritillary, was particularly spectacular, with its nodding heads of mottled purple interspersed on occasion with an albino specimen. Great beauty indeed.
I haven’t seen a meadow of Fritillaria meleagris since leaving Oxon. It’s a lovely reminder of their beauty on a snowy January day

Such a magical flower, almost as potent as an orchid and just as lovely. I go to see them at Great Dixter, which is a little nearer to me.

They look prettier than the tittle suggests.

How I wish I could establish a colony of Frtillaria meleagris like this! I’ve tried and I’ve tried, but never had any success. Tips?

I see that you are sifting through your photographic data, sorting and filing away, after all! Great job!

There is a garden near by that opens for the NGS where these grow alongside a small stream, magical to see, such delicate beauty.

Sounds gorgeous, there really is nothing like a fritillary.

They are lovely. They are also good at Sissinghurst – you can visit both Dixter and Siss in a day!
