This burnt toffee tagetes is a welcome interloper, emerging from a packet of Naughty Marietta seed. She was supposed to be a blonde but turned out to be a brunette. More Liz than Marilyn. I’m not complaining, in the low autumn sunshine she is a real beauty. She was naughtier than we imagined. I do love a rogue.
Yes, surprises can be a treat. The squirrels often dig up flower bulbs, re-plant them in a place of their own choosing and then forget them. As a result, tulips come up in all sorts of unexpected locations.

I used to visit Wisley Gardens regularly, and loved their area of municipal planting beds, always always, there would be a ‘rogue’ in the well regulated and formal patterns that they had so meticulously set out, always made me smile. Even in the best regulated places …
