Exciting times. Today, the inaugural saffron harvest was undertaken at Chez Nous. There was no need to employ seasonal staff to help with the workload. We took full responsibility for the task at hand. Three beautiful stamen are now drying in their own tiny Tupperware box, nestled on some plumped up kitchen paper, for their regal comfort. Thanks to Lora for top tips. I’m planning a paella for 2025.

I thought I was a bit late, I only planted them a few weeks ago. You should give them a try, as you can see these are in a pot. Think of all the lovely things you could bake! Hopefully a couple more of mine might flower …….

A very small paella at the weekend? I am going to give saffron a try in pots. Another thing you have given me to do!

Sorry to make work for you! I bought the corms/bulbs/whatevers the day we were at Rosemoor Flower Show and planted them a couple of weeks later. Pretty good going really.

It looks extremely healthy and well, saffrony. My bulbs didn’t even have the decency to send up a leaf.

That was a bit mean! Give them a good talking too, that often helps. Or chuck them out and try some new ones. 🙂

I think I’ve done my dash with crocuses. I’ll now turn my attention to bulbs that I know will perform here.

Growing your own saffron? Well I am impressed. But maybe you could do with a few more bulbs.

Whether or not you harvest them, the contrast of the orange and the purple is fabulous! I have thought about growing some myself. I love Paella!

They did look rather lovely in the sunshine. Put it in your diary for 2025, you can pop on over the border!

Awesome ! You just have to grow rice and you’ll be ready for the paella! (joking aside, I think sometimes trying to grow rice 😁… for fun)
