Yes, it really is Rudolph! He popped into The Farm yesterday to say hello before he gets down to the nitty gritty “flying through the air and present delivery” stuff. Although underwhelmed by the incessant rain, a juicy apple and a bit of fuss made it worth his while. He said he doesn’t gets treated so well by Santa who canContinue reading “Rudolph”

Solstice
The winter solstice must be acknowledged. So we will celebrate with a flower that is actually supposed to be blooming at this time of year*. A cyclamen. Wonderful. Nearly Spring! * The Official Horti Rule Book, Chapter 7 Non-negotiable Flowering Times.
Fuchsia glazioviana
Christmas preambles leave little time for reflection. The elegant Fuchsia glazioviana is flowering very prettily in my garden at the moment. So I will leave it to this dancing lady to entertain you with her pink and purple gown, pirouetting in the winter winds.
Zantedeschia aethiopica – Arum Lily
Zantedeschia aethiopica, tricky to say, but certainly worth the effort. If all else fails you can always call it the Arum Lily, but it isn’t half as much fun.
Forgiveness
This is the time of year for forgiveness. A season to clutch to your bosom those that have offended you over the previous year, or even years. So, with that in mind, and much as it goes against my normal anti-cotoneaster stance, here is a photo for your delectation. Seasonably scarlet berries, stretching far into the horizon,Continue reading “Forgiveness”
Struggle
We are all struggling a little at the moment. It was another sodden day at the Farm, quite miserable really. We soldiered on, clearing and mulching, playing horticultural chicken, the first to cry defeat would be ridiculed. Just as I had waved my white flag and was ready to go home I spotted this dainty roseContinue reading “Struggle”
Fuchsia “Bornemann’s Beste”
Fuchsia “Bornemann’s Beste” still going strong. The gift that keeps giving, thanks Harriet!
BOGOF
Out-of-time flowers are most welcome as we draw towards the winter equinox. However they are quite different to their summer counterparts. The light that brushes these blooms, for only a short time each day, is soft and kind allowing hidden traits to come to the fore. Paler, more delicate, even vulnerable; somehow ethereal. A new incarnation ofContinue reading “BOGOF”
Festive
The callistemon in my garden is looking very festive, deciding to throw out a random crimson flower for the occasion. If you squint your eyes up tight and look at the bloom through the bottom of a wine bottle you can almost see Rudolph and his mates pulling Santa across the sky on route to deliverContinue reading “Festive”
The Truth
I love those tales of glorious winter gardens, lyrical with frosty mornings. The cold crisp days are invigorating and inspiring whilst the low afternoon sun caresses the ruddy leaves of Leucothoe “Scarletta”. Goldfinches feast on hoary seed heads and fluffy bloomin’ bunnywunnys hop past giggling. Let me tell you the truth, well my truth anyway. I willContinue reading “The Truth”
